Buttons at the top take you to tasks like creating new transactions or customers, importing/exporting data to/from Excel, and building customer mailings in Word. Click on one, and that individual's transactions appear on the right. The Customer Center, for example, displays a list of customers and jobs in a pane on the left. These screens isolate the records and transactions related to each. QuickBooks also offers individual pages, or, "Centers," for Customers, Vendors, and Employees. Peachtree works similarly, though its interface isn't quite as elegant as QuickBooks'. These icons are supplemented by standard menus that contain additional options, and a modifiable toolbar that gives you easy access to commonly used tasks. Comparatively, Peachtree's initial setup wizard is a bit more abbreviated, but it provides a more thorough setup guide once you've created your company. You'll also okay the list of accounts that QuickBooks has chosen for your industry. You'll set up your fiscal year and password, and answer questions that will signal QuickBooks to turn specific tools off and on (like whether you use multiple currencies). You enter business contact information and select the type of industry that's appropriate. It uses a wizard to walk you through the groundwork. Setting up your company in QuickBooks, however, remains the same. It streamlines what is usually a lengthy process, and reduces the number of required screens from 15 to six.
